His vow of celibacy released shortly after my Mother and he met at the monastery on a school trip. My father never spoke of Buddhism to my memory, but we always had a Buddha on the mantle piece wherever we lived, at the many different homes of childhood. Later, many years after my father’s death I attended a ten day silent meditation course at Birken Buddhist Monastery in Canada, the same lineage my father had been ordained in. We had never spoken of his monastic years when he was alive. I had a moment during that retreat of gasping for breath as tears appeared as if out of nowhere clogging my throat. “My name, Maya!” Oh my gosh, my father disrobed, walked into ‘Maya’ knowingly, and he cleverly called his first child Maya. Well that is like a rock n roll commitment to a choice I thought! Most of all my tears were because I felt intentionally or unintentionally I had been given a clue, and a direction, a purpose in my life. Maya is defined as Illusion, (sanskrit) in the oxford Dictionary. I was most interested to hear from Many Punjabi’s when I moved to Canada that Maya is translated as money. I had to think about this a bit to work it out, but yes I get it now, how this interpretation could come to be. The valuing of the material plane that stops us transcending to enlightenment is in spiritual teachings what Maya, the illusion, is referring to. I have spent all the days I remember with a searing awareness of ‘the real’ which has always since childhood felt not the same as the conditioned ideas of reality in the societies I have grown and lived within. Also despite many traumatic experiences in life always quickly brought back to awareness of a current of joy, of lightheartedness running through all of life and living.The buoyancy that would always return once I had broken a dead end road perception cap that had eased itself over my brain yet again. The return of light, of buoyancy became expected in each bout of varying levels of stark trauma, pain, terrible health issues and difficulty in life. What I can help with is a return to light, a stronger array of navigation tools for the challenges and all elements of life, the sorrows, desires, dreams, and an increasing awareness of ‘the real’, which always provides a sense of well being no matter what, when we learn to see it and feel it more. Additionally a big interest of mine are the adventures in befriending the real and what we can powerfully learn from these adventures.
